When we got back to the room, I immediately started peeling myself out of those awful nylons and donning something reasonable. Janie gave me a bit of a disapproving look for this because in truth our Sunday duties weren't quite over. After dinner we were scheduled for another exciting round of reading out of church manuals in the form of "Family Home Evening." And Janie felt that one should respect the sabbath by dressing reverently the entire day.

Janie put on some religious music -- the only thing allowed to be played in our room on Sunday according to the rules she set for us -- and started preparing the lesson for Family Home Evening. I was lucky enough not to have a calling this semester, but Janie was called to be the "mom" of our Family Home Evening group.

Family Home Evening is supposed to be the weekly devotional held by the family at home in the evening, hence the name. Here at BYU we're obviously not with our families nor are we at home, but that's no excuse for getting out of holding a meeting! So the ward randomly assigns people a group of boys and girls to be their "family" so that there's no danger of missing out on the blessings that come from regular doses of Family Home Evening.

Even though normally Family Home Evening would be held on Monday nights, logistics require the BYU student families to meet on Sunday evening instead. Monday night would be inconvenient for the times when people have tests or big assignments due on Tuesday. A Sunday meeting couldn't possibly interfere with school work since we're not supposed to be working on Sunday in the first place. Additionally on Mondays it would be difficult to find a place to meet. Most of the time the girls' dorms were off-limits to boys and the boys' dorms were off-limits to girls, but on Sunday afternoon there were special visiting hours. Every other Sunday the boys could visit the girls' dorms and on the opposite Sundays the girls were allowed in the boys' dorms. Of course the doors to the rooms containing opposite-sex visitors must remain open. And to give the devil a little less lee-way, we ate up a good chunk of this dangerously tempting time-bloc with a wholesome episode of Family Home Evening.

EXMORMON

I looked up from my page of Latin homework that I was clandestinely reviewing to see what Janie was up to, aside from humming along with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Astonishingly, she appeared to be making some flannel story-board characters.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"I'm preparing our Family Home Evening lesson, silly," she replied.

"Okay, but why are you cutting out pictures of Noah's Ark for a flannel story board?"

"It's one of the suggestions for this week's lesson in our Family Home Evening manual," she said, pointing to the page.

"Um, I hate to be a wet blanket here," I said, "but I would suspect that that suggestion is intended for families with children under five years old."

"Oh, I know that," she said, "I just thought it would be fun." And with that she went back to her humming and handicrafts.
