"Did you get the impression that people were making moral judgments about you based on your unusual haircut?"

"In a word, yes."

"How so?"

"Well for one thing, my roommate called the Honor Code Office on me for it, even though I wasn't breaking any rules. And then the Honor Code Office, instead of telling her not to worry about it, called me in to have a talk with me."

"Really? How interesting," she said, scribbling furiously in her notebook.

"Actually, I'd really prefer that you not mention that in your article, if possible," I said. "The Honor Code guy let me off without even a warning, and I'd hate to go out of my way to make trouble for myself but making it look like I went straight to the press about the incident."

"But this is important to the story," Paige protested. "How about if I change your identifying personal information and then let you read the article before it goes to press?"

"Okay," I said.

"You know, you should consider joining the staff of the Student Review. We have a lot of fun, and I think you'd fit right in."

"You think so? I'm not sure I really have anything to contribute," I said.

"Sure you do," said Paige. "I mean, I don't know you that well, but it seems to me that you have an interesting point of view. We're always looking for good articles, and we need people with other skills as well such as illustrations, page layout, and selling ads."

EXMORMON

I wasn't sure I'd be much help on illustrations, layout, or sales, but I thought perhaps I could come up with a reasonable article or two. "Sounds like fun," I said. "Maybe I could try my hand at writing an article."

"Cool! Our next meeting is on Thursday evening. If you come, I'll introduce you to the other people who work on my page, and we'll see if we can get the page editor to give you an assignment. Here, I'll write down for you the address of the building where the meeting is held."

At this point our little interview appeared to be wrapping up, which was a bit of a disappointment because there was one more topic that I kind of wanted to discuss with her, and I wasn't sure quite how to bring it up. Fortunately she seemed to be thinking the same thing.

"Actually, there's one other thing I wanted to ask you about if you don't mind," she said, handing me the paper with the address.

"Fire away," I replied.

"Well, I was wondering what you thought of my friend Rex."

"Why?" I asked, "Did he ask about me?"

"No," she said, "but he seemed like he might be interested in you, so naturally I was wondering what you thought of him."

"What can I say?" I asked. "Sure, he seems cute and fun, and I'd be happy to get to know him better if he's interested."

"So you don't already have a boyfriend?" she asked.

I laughed, "Not at present."
