"Thank you so much."

"No problem," he said. "Now just lay low, and I'll see you tonight." Then he went back to the house.

As soon as he was gone, I knew immediately where I wanted to go. Riding on the local bus the other day, I had noticed a large brick building marked "Orem Public Library."

I'd made a note of basically how to get there. It would probably be a bit of a walk from here, but I figured it wasn't too far, and I didn't dare waste any more of my tiny remaining money on bus fare.

The walk turned out not to be too bad. It was a beautiful, sunny day. Again I felt like I should be terrified considering my situation. But feeling the morning sun on my face, I couldn't help but feel hopeful about the future.

I walked up to the door and went straight in. I caught myself feeling almost surprised that I was allowed to walk right in like that. On some level I must have believed that I would never be allowed to get this far.

Wandering around the library, I was astonished by the number of books. I had never seen so many different books all in one place except in my distant memories and in my imagination. I knew there had been a big public library in a community not far from where I lived, but my parents had never let me go there.

I was overwhelmed and hardly knew where to begin. Then I saw the section with the science books. It was exciting to be surrounded by so many forbidden books and nothing to stop me from reaching out and touching them. Again I didn't know where to begin until a a book with a picture of an ape on it caught my eye.

EXMORMON

For a second, I was almost afraid to pick it up off the shelf, but I couldn't stop myself.

Obviously I wasn't struck by lightning or anything picking it up, and I felt foolish for allowing my irrational fears make me hesitate even a tiny bit. The book looked interesting as I paged through it a bit. There were a few others on the same shelf by the same author, Jane Goodall. I took the first one and sat down with it.

The book was the most fascinating thing I'd ever read. It was about a researcher (the author of the book) who had traveled to Africa to observe chimpanzee society in the wild. It was filled with story after story describing and illustrating the chimpanzees' social behavior. I read it voraciously, straight through, without a single pause.
