Saturday's Warrior
"What is it?" he asked.
"It's a surprise," I said with a sly smile.
"Sounds interesting," he said, complicitly returning my look.
We were almost done with our first run-through when Rex appeared in the doorway. As soon as the music stopped he asked "Jill, are you ready to go?"
Rex's question hit me like a ton of bricks. Of all the days for him to want to leave early! What rotten luck! I was sure that someone would discover that the font was unlocked between now and next Tuesday, and my window of opportunity would be closed.
"We only need to run through this number two more times," said Pinky. "Can you wait?"
"No," said Rex. "I have all of the video stuff loaded up in the car, and I have to get it back to the school before Ron locks up and goes home. I'm already pushing it as it is. We have to go now."
"I can take her home," said Walter. "I have to stay to lock up the building here anyway, so it's no trouble."
I was absolutely elated by his offer! Not only did it make my little plan possible, but it meant that he found the plan interesting enough to want to make an effort himself to help carry it out without even really knowing what it was.
Rex raised an eyebrow warily at Walter, and then looked with displeasure at my expression of obvious delight. Still, he didn't have the authority to forbid me from staying with Walter nor did he even have a good reason to ask me to leave early with him. So he grumbled an okay and left.
