Saturday's Warrior

"Well, aren't you little miss judgmental today?" asked Rex. "In fact, she's a really nice lady, and she's tried to quit smoking a million times. Attitudes like yours are the very reason she never goes to church. According to Jake, she gets really upset about the way everyone in her ward looks down their noses at her when they catch the slightest odor of tobacco on her clothes, so she can't stand to attend Sunday services. Then he says she ends up not bothering with any of the other commandments, which just makes the ward gossip about her worse, and the whole thing becomes a vicious cycle."

"That's too bad," I said. I felt kind of guilty judging her like that exactly the way the people from her ward had done, but I didn't know what else to say about it.

At dinner Mom wanted to know all of the details of what had happened at the rehearsal and which of our friends had been cast in which roles. I felt sorry for my little sister Joy here because she had tried out for the part of Shelley and hadn't gotten it. But that really wasn't my fault, and I couldn't help but want to tell my mom all about the production and how excited I was about it.

My part of telling Mom about my friends' roles was pretty short since none of my friends had gotten parts. I was the only person from my whole grade who had gotten any part other than just being cast in the chorus, either the angel chorus or the chorus of rebellious kids. Rex however had plenty to recount since practically all of the starring roles had gone to kids from his grade, that is people who had just graduated from high school this past Spring.

Rex's two best friends, Ben and Jake, had both gotten important parts. In fact Ben had landed the starring role of Jimmy. Ben's girlfriend, Paige, had gotten a speaking role as one of the kids in the gang. Her part had vocal solos in both the songs Zero Population and Summer of Fair Weather even though her character didn't have a name other than "first girl."

Mom said that it seemed appropriate for Paige to play one of the bad guys since she could hardly play one of the wholesome kids with her outlandish "goth" look. Rex didn't comment on that, but I felt a little less guilty about having been judgmental earlier since it was clear where I'd gotten it from if my mom was doing it too.

"I suppose Jake's in the gang too," said Mom. "Let me guess -- they cast him as the gang leader, Mack. Right?"

Rex laughed. "Nope, you're not even close. Jake got cast as one of the two missionaries."

Mom's eyes widened. "Really?" she asked. Then she laughed sardonically. "So he's going to ride up to the theater on his motorcycle and take off his leather jacket and trade it in for a missionary suit and tie?"

"Yeah, I guess so," said Rex in a perfectly serious tone.

"How did that happen?" asked Mom.

"I don't know," said Rex. "Maybe his mom wanted him playing a missionary. She's the assistant director of the production and surely helped out with the casting."

"Jake's mom wanted him to play a missionary?" asked Mom. "Now I've heard everything! Is this the same Jake's mom that smokes and drinks and swears like a sailor?"

"Mom," said Rex, annoyed. "Jake's mom is happy for him that he's taking more of an interest in the church these days. You know very well that he's going to be attending BYU this Fall."

"I wish you would go there too, Rex, like Kathy, since all your friends are going there," said Mom.
