Saturday's Warrior
Joy was on the bed reading Godel, Escher, Bach. I had just finished reading the book myself on Rex's recommendation, and I'd in turn told Joy about it and suggested it to her. It made me smile to see she'd listened to my advice.
"I guess you'll have to pass that book along to Jared next when you're done with it," I said.
"Are you kidding?" Joy asked. "Jared would never read a book like this one. The kid's as dumb as a post. I don't know how he ended up in the same family with you and me and Rex."
"So what do you think of the book so far?" I asked.
"Seems pretty interesting," she replied. "Of course I've only read the first few chapters. I liked the dialog between Achilles and the Tortoise."
"There are dialogs like that all through the book," I said. "The Zen stuff is cool too." Joy didn't respond.
I wanted to make Joy feel better, so I invited her to come along on
the babysitting job I had lined up for the following evening. We
occasionally did babysitting jobs together just for fun, even though
it meant splitting the money. Our plans seemed to cheer her up a bit,
so I figured everything was okay.
