Young Women's

I left them to deal with their problem and got in the shower. A hot shower always feels good on a cold day. Of course the house was heated and insulated, but still it was always a little cold in the winter, especially with people coming in and out. So after walking barefoot on the cold kitchen floor, it was nice to warm up in the shower.

Sunday morning was never really the time to savor a shower though since we had church first thing in the morning, and everybody needed a turn. So I turned off the water as soon as I was clean enough but long before I was warm enough. As I went back to my room, I called down to Lynn to tell her the shower was free.

Of my three church dresses hanging up in my closet, I chose the dark blue one with little white flowers. Since I'd learned to button and tie it behind my back, I was able to get ready by myself in a matter of minutes. Once I had my nylons and dress shoes on and my hair combed, I went to Mom and Dad's room to see if Annette needed any help.

In Mom and Dad's room, Mom was curling Annette's hair with a curling iron. Annette was wearing one of Lynn's dresses. I didn't ask what she had done for panties, but I imagined it was something similarly improvised.

It looked like they didn't need any help, so I went back to my room and sat down to admire my painting some more. Adrianna was perfect, but the more I looked at it, the more I got the impression that one of Wyxetta's legs was longer than the other. Oh well, it was too late to fix it now.

"We're getting in the car now!" called Mom from downstairs. "April! Lynn! Come put your coats on!"

I put down my painting and started going down the stairs. Lynn followed, still wearing her bathrobe and holding a dress that was the same as mine only in green.

"Lynn, you're not dressed!" exclaimed Mom. "We're on our way out the door!"

"Mom, I can't wear this dress, it's horrible!" said Lynn, throwing the dress down on the living room couch. "It's the ugliest dress on the planet! I'll look like hell!"

"Lynn Hanson!" said Dad, shocked. "This behavior is totally unacceptable. You march back upstairs this minute and put that dress on."

So Lynn grabbed the dress and stormed back upstairs. We all waited in the foyer except Dad who went out to the garage to unplug the heater in the engine of the car and to start the car running. In a few minutes Lynn was back downstairs wearing the dress and a huge scowl.

The seat was cold as the three of us girls took our place, with Annette in the middle and me and Lynn on either side. Once everyone was settled and belted in, we set off.

"Great!" said Lynn, still in a foul mood, "You have on my barrettes too! Is there anything of mine you didn't take?"

"Shut up!" replied Annette.

I turned to Lynn and said "Don't make trouble. It's already your fault we're going to be late."

"It's not my fault, it's Annette's for taking my good dress!" With that she gave Annette a shove.
