Young Women's

"What fun!" said Alexandra's mom Sister Thomas. "I remember how much I used to love slumber parties when I was a girl! I almost wish I could join you." Amy laughed, but Alexandra looked worried, as though her mom might actually join us if we accidentally invited her out of politeness.

Once Sister Thomas had handed us all napkins, she said "Well, your father and I are going to bed, so you can start whispering about your secret loves now without worrying that we'll hear you." Then she gave us a big smile and a wink and left.

We played a few more rounds of killer Uno to make sure the family had plenty of time to fall asleep before we chose our next activity. Sarah suggested "Monopoly", but that was unanimously rejected right off the bat. None of us wanted to get stuck playing some boring board game all night that would just put us to sleep.

Amy suggested that we should play dress-up. I wanted to reject that suggestion as well for being too babyish until I saw the box of dress-up clothes Amy went and brought out. There were all sorts of strange-looking dresses and other costumes. Alexandra said that her mom had made a lot of them and collected the rest second-hand for road shows and Halloween parties. There were a bunch of things that looked fun to try on.

"Your mom must really be just a big kid at heart," said Sarah, pulling some sort of royal robe out of the box. "She likes to play dress-up, have slumber parties, swap secrets about boys..."

"Don't I know it," said Alexandra, grabbing a shimmering silky black dress.

"If we'd have let her stay, she'd have been the first one to suggest that we play the game where we go around in a circle and say which boys we like!" laughed Amy.

Once we all had our dresses on, we started doing each other's hair and make-up. For the make-up we had loads of fun giving each other an exaggeratedly glamorous look with bright colored lipstick and eye shadow and lots of glitter. Melissa drew a little purple star on my cheek.

The only exception was Lynn, who had found an old tuxedo jacket and a top hat in the box and thought it would be funny to dress up as a man. She had Amy draw a mustache on her and dark eyebrows.

The last step was for all of us to do each other's hair. Lynn just pulled her own hair back into a ponytail and tucked it into the back of her collar and watched the rest of us. Amy seemed pretty skilled at doing hair. After curling up Alexandra's hair with a curling iron and accessorizing it with ribbons and little sparkly clips, she gave Sarah an appropriately regal hairdo with some straight parts and some small braids draped around her head in different ways.
