Young Women's

Doing up Melissa's hair, I tried to copy Amy's style to go with the green velvet Renaissance-style dress she was wearing. I started by carefully brushing her long red hair to gleaming. I gathered it up in my hands and made most of the back part into a series of braids. After pinning up some loops of braided hair in back, I took the curling iron and framed her face with little ringlets.

When we were done, we all looked beautiful yet hilarious. Melissa seemed to get the biggest kick out of the whole thing of any of us. As soon as she got in front of a mirror, she about died laughing and couldn't stop.

"I have to get a picture of this!" she said. "I have to show this to the guys I play hockey with! They'll laugh their asses off!" She ran off to get her camera out of her bag and gave it to me to snap her picture.

After I'd snapped a few good shots of her, Lynn insisted on getting into the act. She made a huge production of getting into a theatrical pose on bended knee to kiss Melissa's hand. Melissa tried to put on an expression of mock rapture, but she couldn't stop laughing long enough, so I just got what pictures I could. They were pretty funny.

I couldn't help but want to join in the fun, so I was pretty happy when Melissa had me give the camera to Lynn and beckoned me over and put her arm around me to do another funny pose. Maybe it wasn't quite as funny as Lynn's but I was sure we looked great together as I pulled her in close for a split second for the shot.

EXMORMON

I was wearing a very simple sparkling silver lamé dress that looked so much like something a fairy princess might wear that I promised myself I'd paint the same dress on Wyxetta, the main character in my graphic novel, for her next portrait. I couldn't see putting my other main character Adrianna in Melissa's green velvet renaissance dress, but I was tempted to paint her in a rugby shirt, even if it wasn't very fairy-like.

I started thinking about how cool it would be to have someone like Melissa as a church friend instead of Alexandra, but I just couldn't picture Melissa as a Mormon. Or really, it was more like I didn't want to imagine her that way, all proper and reverent dressed up for church. I wanted to see her in what I imagined was her natural habitat, on a hockey rink playing rough and wild against a bunch of boys.
