Young Women's
Adrianna had her long, fine arms outstretched. One leg extended straight down all the way to the point of her toe, and the other was slightly bent, like a ballerina. Her wings fluttered behind her. I was working on her curly, black hair and her pointed ears when I heard Mom calling all of us to the dinner table.
Lynn and Annette reluctantly put down their dolls and stopped by my drawing table to admire my work on their way to dinner.
"Wow, she's pretty," said Annette, pointing to Wyxetta.
"Is that one a boy?" asked Lynn, pointing to Adrianna.
"No, she isn't," I replied.
"Well, what do the boy ones look like?" asked Lynn.
I went through my pile of pages of my novel and pulled out one that had a picture of the fairy king.
"Oh," she said, looking at it. Then pointing to my painting she said "I think you should add a boy one here, hiding behind this tree, watching the girls and thinking of coming over to talk to them."
"Yeah, that would be cool," Annette agreed.
"That's not in the story," I said. "This is the cover to the novel, and it illustrates a scene from the story."
"Oh, okay," said Lynn, and she and Annette set off for the kitchen.
Ugh, little sisters! Everything with them was boys, boys, boys! Boys and boys' adventures seemed to matter more to both of them than the fun adventures girls might have on their own! Neither one of them was ever likely to be much of a feminist.
